No Meetings for November and December 2024

To: All Members of the KCDEC
From: Elaine Harris, Chair

Good evening Everyone:

Last Tuesday Democrats all around West Virginia and the United States suffered terrible losses. While we feel down for the losses, we must also look at the bright spots that we had here in Kanawha County due to the hard work of our County Democratic Party, the Federation of Democratic Women and the volunteers who were there to help us along the way.

We can be proud to know Delegate Kayla Young won re-election to her House seat and Delegate Hollis Lewis kept the seat he was appointed to. Natalie Tennant was elected our next County Commissioner, and she will be the first female to ever hold a seat on our County Commission. These were tough and difficult races, but with everyone pulling together and giving them the help and support they needed – these races were wins in the Democratic column. Assessor Sallie Robinson won re-election and will serve another term as our Kanawha County Assessor and Delegate Mike Pushkin won re-election to his house seat. Our first time candidates who lost their races should not be discouraged. They need to run again! Start early, build on the base that has been established and work toward election in the mid-term. Stay involved! In the City of Dunbar – the Democratic Mayor was re-elected, and Democrats have won a majority of the City Council seats.

Though not the outcomes that we wanted, the Democratic Nominee for Governor – Steve Williams – performed very well in Kanawha County and even with misleading language Kanawha County voters rejected Amendment 1 soundly, even though the rest of the state took the bait and the amendment passed with a very tight simple majority.

It has been a long and tiring campaign season for us all. With that said, the November and December regular meetings of the KCDEC are cancelled. We will not be having regular meetings for the rest of 2024. Announcements for 2025 will be forthcoming. Let’s remember our Veterans and say a prayer for them in honor of Veterans Day. Please enjoy the rest of November – along with the Thanksgiving Holiday and December and the extended Holiday season with your families.

No Regular Meeting in October

A Message from Chairwoman Elaine Harris:

To All Members of the KCDEC:

I send greetings to all of you as we conclude the weekend that started with the State Party’s Annual Roosevelt/Kennedy Dinner in which we honored Kanawha County Democrat of the Year Bob Pepper and West Virginia Democrat of the Year Curt Zickafoose. Bob currently serves as a member of our County Committee and as Co-Chair of our Finance and Audit Committee, and Curt previously served as a member of our County Committee and was the previous Executive Director of the State Party. Many Congratulations to the both of them!

Several of our Democratic Nominees for the House of Delegates went door to door canvassing yesterday, including Delegate Hollis Lewis, as did our Democratic Nominee for County Commission Natalie Tennant. We need all members of our committee to assist with these efforts to elect Democrats.

This email is to serve as notice that at our September Regular Meeting, all typical motions and votes that are required to move us into the final stages of the election cycle were completed. Instead of having a meeting at this time, it is more important for us to dedicate time to our Democratic Candidates and see to it that we elect as many Democrats as possible from the Top of the Ticket to the Bottom of the Ticket.

There will be NO Regular meeting of the KCDEC in October.
What we need everyone to do is to sign up and volunteer to knock on doors, participate in honk and waves, pickup and distribute yard signs, attend events, participate in phone banks for our candidates, and make donations to our county committee.

Please also take note that we will be hosting a Democratic Picnic at Little Creek Park, Shelter #1 on Sunday, October 13, 2024 from 2pm-4pm. Spread the word around the community and bring a friend. This will be a great time to meet our Democratic Candidates. Bring your favorite covered dish or dessert to add to our pot-luck. Chicken will be provided and hot dogs will be courtesy of Mary Ann Claytor for State Auditor! Don’t miss out!

Secretary Jacob Hively and I will continue to send updates to everyone on activities in and around Kanawha County. Please get involved! Your help is needed.
